After finding out that her Valentine was Marcus Cooley, Hannah's reaction was shocking. Normally, they put 3 matches on the card after paying for it. They put 2 people but at the very top they put a name that matches perfectly for that individual. Hannah was surprised it was Marcus. After getting her card, she got a call from him and Marcus had mentioned that Hannah was the first one on his list as well. While calling him, Marcus asked out Hannah out on a date and Hannah agreed. Now, Hannah is prepared to get to know Marcus and is ready to go on her date.
Finishing her tape recording of her previous friends, Hannah is now explaining the 'Oh My Dollar Valentine'. The Oh My Dollar Valentine is when someone from the school pays exactly one dollar to take a survey and then they compare their answers to someone else from the school and it tells you you're soul mate. As Clay is listening, Hannah is explaing what the Oh My Dollar Valentine is and that she only took the quiz because it was in a magazine and she normally reads the magezine for makeup tips and while she was answering the survey, some questions ask what they look for in a soul mate and she was answering the questions while knowing a person from school that she really liked. She was basically answering questions to get her crush to be her 'soul mate'. The only issue from taking this survey is that it takes time for them to compare someone's answers to another person's answers, Finally, the day arrived and Hannah's 'soulmate' was Marcus Cooley
After listening about the story about Alex Standall, Hannah is now moving foreword and is now going to talk about her good friend, Jessica. Jessica and Hannah were best friends. Jessica was the first friend Hannah made ever since she moved. She also had another best friend, Alex Standall. All three of them were the best of friends. Everyday, all of them would meet up after school and head to a coffeehouse and just sit there and talk to each other for a couple of hours and would just order coffee while talking to each other about the stuff that was going on at school and just things about themselves. Except, both of them turned their backs on Hannah.
Basically what Hannah was saying about Alex Standall was that she was very angry at him. Everyday after school Hannah would go to a store to buy her favorite candy bar and then from there she would go to her house which was actually across the street from where she lived. Except one day Alex Standall was there with Hannah one day. Alex was saying a lot of mean things about Hannah so she confronted him at the store and was just asking him to stop because what he was saying was extremely rude and wrong. After this tape, this means that Clay Jensen has finally listened to one full tape. Other then the other one that explains the rules on how to work these tapes, Hannah created these tapes that are 2 tapes but on different sides
With these audiotapes there was a map included. These maps would lead to a place where an event had occured with Hannah. On the tapes, Hannah Baker said that it was optional for the person with the audiotapes to go to the place. Clay Jensen is listening to Hannah's audiotapes but cannot stop wondering why he is one of the reasons why Hannah died. Obviously because these are tapes, he needs to find a place to hear them but just him by himself. So, Clay remembers that there is a stereo in his garage. Now, he puts the first disc and begins to listen to what Hannah Baker is telling him. As he listens to the audiotapes, he starts to realize why Hannah felt the way she did. The first person on the tape was a boy named Justin.
In the book, 13 Reasons Why, a boy named Clay Jensen recieves a box that is filled with 13 audiotapes. He needed to find a stereo in order to listen to the audiotapes. The audiotapes were created by a girl named Hannah Baker who commited suicide for 13 reasons. She sent the box of tapes to people who were part of the reason of why she killed herself. While hearing these tapes, Clay could not understand why he was a reason as to why Hannah killed herself. He never even knew her that well. So, he couldn't understand why he was a reason for her death. In the box there was also a map. Hannah marked down places where events had occured with her being there. While listening to the tapes, Hannah explains that it is optional for the person with these audiotapes to go to the places that occured. Hannah would have preferred if the person with these tapes had gone that way the know what Hannah went through during that exact time.
